About Your Tutor...

Robert Maxfield
Stonemason

Robert has been working as a stonemason since leaving school in 1988. His work is scattered throughout the Midlands and his commisions have come from as far afield as the Scottish Borders. Examples of Roberts’ craftmanship can be seen above Shakespeares’ tomb in Stratford, on the famous three spires of Lichfield Cathedral and on St Martins church in Birmingham.

After completing his formal apprenticeship with ‘Linford Bridgeman’, Robert took time out from the workshop to successfully study for an HND in Figurative Design and Sculpture at Stafford College. On his return to practical stonemasonry Robert quickly gained a reputation for high quality workmanship and decided to become self-employed.

Now running his workshop from the old barn at Harpsford Mill Farm, Robert undertakes a variety of work, ranging from gargoyles, grotesques, garden walling, ornaments, tracery windows, bespoke fireplaces and restoration work. With his wealth of experience and expertise, Robert now hopes to be able to pass on some of the skills he has acquired in what is seen by many as a ‘dying trade’.

3-day Workshop

Run over a Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the 3-day course is designed as an introduction to the ancient art of stone carving. During the course students will get the chance to create their own unique piece of sculpture, working the stone into shape using centuries-old techniques.

Students will learn how to handle the tools of the trade, choose a piece of stone and work it from ‘rough’ using a traditional mallet and chisel. The emphasis of each day will be on practical work and Robert will be on hand to guide each student and offer advice as needed. Each day will start at 9.00am, finishing at 4.00 on Friday and Saturday, and 3.00 on Sunday. At the end of the course each student will have their own beautiful stone carving to take home with them and enjoy - its bound to become a talking point!
